Dellin Betances' Return Means Bad News Fucking Bears For The Rest Of Baseball
Yesterday the Yankees welcomed back two of their injured: Jordan Montgomery and Dellin Betances. For Jordan, I think it was just great to see him back on the mound after missing most of 2018 and 2019. The results weren’t great, but I just wanted to see him healthy with no complications. We’ll see him in the starting rotation in 2020 as a big young piece moving forward.
The other man who returned is one bad mamma jamma who will have a huge impact on the 2019 postseason: Dellin Betances. I whole heartedly believe when he’s on there is not a more dominant pitcher in the game than him. It’s honestly a sick joke when he’s got everything working. Before you know it you’ve fallen behind 0-2 as he drops his breaking ball from the clouds and dances off the mound in your face. It’s not a fun time as a hitter. Last year when he relieved Severino in the 5th inning he was lights out.
Dellin has been plagued with shoulder issues all year. During spring he was unable to get his fastball higher than 92 mph. Usually he starts slow and builds up his velocity gradually, but it never came around this time. After months and months of rest and rehab, he’s back. The velocity still isn’t where it should be, but if he commands his breaking ball like he did yesterday, he can absolutely get away with 95 mph like he did on Sunday. The Yankees and Dellin are still confident he can get back up to the 97 mph+ range, and if he can that’s icing on the cake. If Betances can do what he did on Sunday in October then this bullpen is going to be other-worldly. Yesterday was his first time working on one day’s rest since ramping up his pitching program and it could not have gone better.
That 95 mph paint job on the outside corner was orgasmic when I saw it live. I’m ecstatic for Betances. This has been such a tough year for him, especially considering he’s a free agent in the offseason. He’s also had to sit back and watch from the sidelines as his teammates have a dream season. You know he wants to be out there on that mound more than anyone. Born in Washington Heights, Dellin wants to help deliver number 28 as much as anyone in that clubhouse.
As long as no one dies in the final two weeks we’re going to be looking at a super bullpen of Chad Green, Tommy Kahnle, Adam Ottavino, Dellin Betances, Zack Britton, and Aroldis Chapman. I know Houston has Verlander, Cole and Greinke, but they don’t sniff the Yankees pen. No one does. I’m really not sure there’s ever been a bullpen like this one ever assembled. I know no one takes the Yankees starting pitching seriously and that’s okay. Let others be dumb and naive. James Paxton has won every single one of his last nine starts. Masahiro Tanaka you always count on in October. And Luis Severino, one of the best pitchers in baseball, is back tomorrow. Don’t forget about Domingo German either. You only need 4-5 innings out of these guys before it’s game over.
This freight train is locked and loaded, full speed ahead ready to end any team’s season that tries to step in their way. Bring me October.
